Star Wars Films Will Keep Getting Axed, Here's Why

I haven’t done one of these “think pieces” in awhile, so I’m gonna start with a list:

Star Wars movies either canceled or in limbo:

Obi-Wan Kenobi (reworked as a show)

Boba Fett (reworked as a show)

Rian Johnson Trilogy

Benioff & Weiss Trilogy

Knights of the Old Republic

Kevin Feige Movie

Rogue Squadron

A Droid Story

Lando

Taika Waititi Movie

Damon Lindelof Movie

That’s fifteen movies. Quite a bit, eh? So now the question becomes: Why does this keep happening, and will it ever get better?

I can already answer the second part of the question: No.

But to understand why, we need to dissect the first part of the question…

Back in 1972, George Lucas began working on what would eventually become Star Wars. The movie came out in 1977. That means he had five entire years to work on the movie soup-to-nuts, without having to worry about fan expectations because, surprise, there were no fans yet…

Thankfully, the film received immediate universal praise. The following film, The Empire Strikes Back, was met with some initial criticism, but people quickly came around to it. Since then, each installment has been divisive, at best. Things became even more complex in 2012, when Disney acquired the property. Now, the franchise had to try to please both fans AND shareholders alike. Spoiler alert: both camps want as much content as possible, even if they don’t admit it…

To make matters worse, Disney launched its own streaming service in 2019, just as the mainline Skywalker Saga was coming to end. Similarly to Marvel, Star Wars now had to define a new, post-saga course for its movies, while also justifying the existence of multiple shows a year, all while still having to appeal to both fans and shareholders alike…

Therefore, as one would expect, Lucasfilm is under pressure to keep announcing content on a regular basis. Some of you reading this may go “they should at least write an outline before announcing something.” While I’m not on the inside, I can all but guarantee that every new movie they announce has at least an outline before they announce it. That said, a good outline doesn’t necessarily guarantee a good script, let alone a good movie. Speaking as a writer myself, I can’t even begin to tell you how many times I’ve written an outline, thinking I have a hit on my hands, only to then start expanding said outline into an actual manuscript and realizing what I had was actually shit. In fact, it just happened to me again today…

So now you may be thinking “okay, well then they should write at least one full script draft before they announce something.” I think it’s pretty safe to say that, if it weren’t for having to keep the shareholders happy, that’s exactly what they would do. In fact, they even tried that a few times, but the problem is that scripts take quite a bit of time to write, and when it comes to Star Wars, it’s hard to keep things a secret, especially from scoop-hungry journalists. Keep in mind that the Kevin Feige movie was never officially announced by Disney or Lucasfilm themselves. They were secretly working on the script, and then someone on the inside talked to a journalist, and the rest is history. Same thing happened to the Damon Lindelof film.

This is all to say that, a lot of times, a project is either forced into announcement prematurely by the major studio (Disney, in this case), or its existence is leaked to the press while it’s still in the scripting phase. This even happens to small, non-IP projects that never get finished, let alone something like Star Wars…

Even Marvel’s beloved Infinity Saga hit some bumps in the road along the way (some entries were better than others, plus, remember when Inhumans was supposed to be a movie?). And while the Multiverse Saga continues to chug along, its reception seems to keep declining with each and every new release, and their plans are slowly becoming more “wobbly” now too (remember when Armor Wars was supposed to be a show? Is Kang still gonna be the new final boss?). I’ve also said this before, but even the Infinity Saga itself didn’t become “solidified” until the first Avengers film in 2012 (they didn’t know they were gonna pursue the Thanos story until then, hence why the cartoony-looking gauntlet full of stones in the first Thor film had to be retconned as a decoy).

Besides, do you think the people running Star Wars want to keep putting out multiple mediocre movies every year, like Marvel does right now? Especially when Star Wars seems to receive ten times as much scrutiny? As a matter of fact, no other franchise outside of Marvel has managed to pull off the assembly-line model that they themselves pioneered, and can barely still do themselves. I can’t even count on two hands how many abandoned film slates DC has had in the last decade, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the whole James Gunn thing doesn’t work out now either…

With that all being said, I think it’s time for all of us to accept that the Infinity Saga was a fluke, and that a pre-determined, decade-long film slate like that is never gonna happen ever again. When it comes to any franchise, movies are gonna keep getting announced because shareholders (as well as fans, to a lesser extent) want to keep knowing what’s going on. Some of those plans will happen, some of them won’t. It is what it is. In fact, we now live in a world where an entire movie can be filmed and yet still be canceled (RIP Batgirl). My best advice would be to just not take any of this stuff too seriously until you see a trailer for it…

I’d like to also remind everyone that good art usually takes time. It took Tolkien seventeen years to finally publish all three volumes of The Lord of the Rings, after all. I also think that the days of something getting announced and then being released just a few years later are over. Like I said at the start of this post, Lucas took five whole years to make the original film. Similarly, he announced The Phantom Menace in 1993, and the movie itself only came out six entire years later. On another similar note, the original Spider-Man movie was in development hell for like ten years and went through a few different directors (even James Cameron was supposed to do it, at one point). Terminator 2 and Aliens both took seven years to make (both by Cameron too, funny enough). Pixar sequels take a while too. The list goes on…

People these days expect a slate announcement for everything when, not that long ago, there were no slate announcements for franchises cause franchises as we know them now didn’t even exist yet. For a long time, there was no internet/ social media to even use for such announcements. Everything just got reported through trade magazines like Variety and whatnot. Also, up until 2008, superhero movies did not connect together to form cinematic universes, and other series like Star Wars, Harry Potter, Middle-Earth, etc. were nowhere near ready to think about spin-offs and whatnot. Furthermore, Marvel head Kevin Feige even said recently that, going forward, Marvel itself “will operate more like a normal development studio, so don’t expect every project that gets reported on to actually get made” (I’m paraphrasing there). Even he’s getting tired of these big slate announcements, cause they’re starting to backfire on him (remember when the Blade reboot movie was announced in 2019?).

I say all this because I’ve noticed movie nerds getting more and more anxious about this stuff. A few months ago, it was announced that the sequel to The Batman would only be released in late 2026 (four and a half years after the first one), and a bunch of people online threw a temper tantrum over it (EDIT: Delayed to 2028 now, which is more warranted of criticism). Unfortunately, it seems that Marvel (and major studio culture in general) has conditioned everyone into thinking that we always need content within a few years from announcement. We need to get out of that mindset, I think…

If it’s any consolation, I’m sure all the in-limbo Star Wars projects listed at the top here will eventually get made. Some might mutate into shows (like Kenobi and Fett did). Some might change directors still. Some might only get released like ten or so years after they were originally announced. This was the world before Marvel, and it’s the world again now…

Peace!

UPDATE: I’m not saying that all future Marvel films will suck, nor am I saying that Star Wars shouldn’t start doing multiple movies a year like Marvel does. I’m not in a position to say what any of these brands should or shouldn’t do. Maybe all Marvel movies from here on out will be great. Maybe Star Wars will start doing multiple films a year and be able to do it just as well as Marvel does. Both of those cases would be nice, actually…

Reimagining Star Wars As One Big Show

Recently I was asking myself why I like to write about Star Wars so much on this blog, and why I keep doing it, even when I say I won’t. And then I realized something; talking to other people about Star Wars sucks, cause all of our opinions about it are too “unique” from one another, at this point. That said, I still have thoughts about it, and don’t want to keep those thoughts stuck in my own head, so this is the next best thing…

And about a year ago, I had this thought in particular; what if all the movies were one big show instead? I find that Star Wars is a lot funner to think about when you just look at it all as “one big show” that’s been running on and off since 1977. Furthermore, as much as I enjoy all the movies (for different reasons), I don’t really have two hours to kill to watch one of them in my day-to-day life, even on weekends. Therefore, I came up with a way to watch them all in “chunks” instead (using Disney Plus for the time stamps).

To make things a little more interesting, I also came up with episode titles for each segment. On top of that, I’m including Obi-Wan Kenobi on this list too, as it’s the only Star Wars show that didn’t give titles to its episodes, so I thought it’d be fun to make up my own titles for it. Lastly, I’m including some episodes of The Clone Wars and Rebels that I consider “essential” if you want to also incorporate all the other live-action shows (which I will list here as well). I like the other animated shows too, but none of them have anything “essential,” in my opinion.

The Ahsoka Show: Seven Things I Wanna See

So I heard that the upcoming Ahsoka show for Star Wars finally started filming the other day. Therefore, I thought it’d be fun to make a predictions list for this show, like I did for Obi-Wan Kenobi. However, for this project, I wasn’t able to come up with a bingo card’s worth of predictions (twenty-four) like I did for that one. I only came up with seven this time around, but figured I could just go into more depth with these, and treat this all more as a “wish list,” of sorts.

With that all out of the way, let’s just dive right into it:

Ghost Anakin

Figured I should put this one first, since its the obvious one. In fact, Hayden Christensen is already confirmed to be in this series, but I don’t think its been specified yet whether or not he’ll be there as a ghost or just in a flashback. Personally, I think it’s the former, and I hope I’m right. Having present-day Ahsoka interact with her fallen-but-redeemed mentor would provide some great closure for her character.

Ezra and Thrawn

So the Rebels cartoon show ended with Ahsoka and Sabine vowing to go search the galaxy for Ezra, who disappeared with Thrawn. When Ahsoka made her live-action debut in The Mandalorian, she straight-up asked someone for Thrawn’s location, so I think it’s pretty safe to say that her own show will involve her hunting down the blue man himself, which means Ezra is probably not too far behind. The fact that a live-action Sabine is already confirmed for the series too further adds fuel to this fire.

Hera’s son

The finale of Rebels also introduced us to another new character, Jacen Syndulla, son of late Jedi Caleb “Kanan Jarrus” Dume and rebel general Hera Syndulla. I find it odd that this character is clearly force-sensitive, yet we hear nothing about him in the sequels. Given how close Sabine is to Hera, I think it would make sense to at least scratch the surface on young Syndulla’s situation at the time of this show. Also, for those who don’t know, his strangely-spelled name is a reference to Han and Leia’s other evil son from the original trilogy continuation you didn’t see…

Clone Wars characters (mainly Barris, Lux and Rex)

In addition to Rebels characters, I think/ hope to see characters from the cartoon series that introduced us to Ahsoka Tano in the first place; The Clone Wars. If I could only pick one person from this roster, it would definitely be Barriss Offee, who originally appeared as a background character in the prequel trilogy, to be fair, but she wasn’t fleshed out at all until Clone Wars. In short; she killed innocent people and framed Ahsoka for it, who then left the order as a result. Barriss was eventually caught and arrested for her crimes, but we never found out what happened to her after that. Was she killed during Order 66 like everyone else? Who knows! If I had to guess, though; she’s probably still alive. In fact, I would go as far as to say she was the one who saved little “Baby Yoda” himself from the aforementioned Order 66. If you look really closely during his flashback of that event, you can see Barriss’s family crest on a banner in the background. I think this was the creators clueing us in. Therefore, tying Ms. Offee herself into this new series would knock out two birds with one stone; giving her closure with Ahsoka, and shedding more light into Grogu’s backstory.

Another Clone Wars character I would like to see return is Lux Bonteri, the one-time flame of Ahsoka who dumped her in favor of Steela Gerrera (sister of Rogue One’s Saw), but then she died literally right after, and then Lux is never seen or heard from again. This is definitely an awkward loose end I would like to see wrapped up, though it’s not essential. Lastly, I wouldn’t mind seeing the return of Captain Rex, since he was by far the clone that Ahsoka was closest to (plus, a convenient Return of the Jedi retcon makes it look like he’s still alive).

No World Between Worlds

Please Lucasfilm, for the love of all that is holy, don’t touch this time travel nonsense ever again…

No more “Gray Jedi” edgelord crap

Unlike most other fans, I actually like Ahsoka less when she becomes more and more disillusioned from the Jedi. I understand it was needed to justify her reasons for leaving, but I feel Rebels and the final season of The Clone Wars both take it too far. It feels insincere when she says “I’m no Jedi” to Vader in Rebels, and then proceeds to draw a pair of lightsabers and duel him. Yes, I am aware of the “Gray Jedi” concept, but for one reason or another, it just doesn’t feel earned. She’s referred to by others as a normal Jedi in The Mandalorian and doesn’t seem to mind (probably cause that show takes place after the original trilogy, so her absence from big events no longer needs to be explained). That said, in The Book of Boba Fett she sees Luke Skywalker building a Jedi school, and yet seems to display no interest whatsoever in helping him out with that. Would be nice if her own show finally does away with this “edgelord” side of her. In fact, it’d be cool to see her fully re-embrace her Jedi roots, as a closing point for her character. Speaking of which…

Ahsoka, Barriss and Rex all dying

Yes, I want all three of these characters to die. The fact that Ahsoka and (likely) Barriss are both still alive during the original trilogy already undermines Luke’s importance enough, so to have both of them still be alive during the sequel trilogy too would equally undermine Rey’s importance (I understand that’s what a lot of people want, but that’s neither here nor there). So if there’s an opportunity to kill both of them off, this is the show to do it. I understand leaving Ezra alive, for now, as taking all this time to find him only to then kill him right away would feel cheap. I further understand leaving both Jacen and Grogu alive, since they’re both still kids at this point. But Ahsoka and (maybe) Barriss? Yeah, time for them to go. I also hope we see Rex bite the dust cause clones have accelerated aging as is, so the fact that he supposedly managed to live this long is already a bit of a stretch.

And there you have it! Like always, I’ll try to be as open-minded as possible once the show actually makes its way to the surface. That said, I’m hoping deep down that at least some of these wishes come to fruition. One way or another, I think this show has the potential to do some interesting things…

Peace!

2023 UPDATE: Even though not all of these predictions came true, I still ended up liking the show, for the most part.

Obi-Wan Kenobi "Bingo Card"

So a few weeks ago I was having a conversation with a friend and we both agreed it would be fun to make “bingo cards” where we each make twenty-four predictions for the new Obi-Wan Kenobi series. With the show now exactly a month away, I thought it would be fun to share my list of predictions here (sorry that I didn’t put it into the format of an actual bingo card…).

Before proceeding with the actual list, however, allow me to explain a few things:

Firstly, I took some of these predictions more seriously than others, so I only expect a few of them to come true, at most, as a lot of these are just “wishful thinking” on my part, and a few are just “silly” predictions I made just for fun. Secondly, I mainly went in the mindset that this entire show will be used for correcting a lot of the continuity errors between the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy (yes, millennials; those exist), so you can expect to see that theme throughout pretty much this entire list. Thirdly, I tried to organize the list itself into chronological order as much as possible, though that proved to be harder to do than I expected. Lastly, in addition to watching the trailer, I did admittedly look up a few spoilers for the show, but only a few (the entire plot is apparently already out there). So beware of spoilers here, you’ve been warned.

Now, without further ado, here are my twenty-four predictions for Obi-Wan Kenobi!

1.Kenobi just goes by “Ben” and doesn’t allow anyone to call him by his real name (as he said to Luke in A New Hope “I haven’t gone by that name since before you were born”). So “Obi-Wan” is almost never actually said in the show (if at all, even).

2.Kenobi runs into someone from his past and pretends not to know them (like he does with the droids in A New Hope).

3.Detail provided for why Owen seems to hate Kenobi so much in A New Hope.

4.Flashback to Anakin’s knighthood and/or when he built the legacy saber.

5.Inciting incident involves Kenobi leaving Tattooine to go try to redeem Anakin (since Vader tells Luke in Return of the Jedi “Obi-Wan once thought as you do”).

6.Palpatine cameo (he confirms to Vader that Obi-Wan is still alive).

7.Kenobi meets Leia and introduces himself as just “Ben.”

8.Leia and “Ben” bond (hence why she would later name her son that).

9.Leia also meets both Vader and Tarkin (she seems to already know them both in A New Hope).

10.Two duels (where Kenobi uses both sabers); one at Vader’s lava castle, and another on a half-finished Death Star (to make Vader’s line in A New Hope “you should not have come back” more literal).

11.First duel is midway through the show, with the intent to redeem Vader, but Kenobi loses and then duels him again at the end, this time angry, and almost kills him, but is stopped by Qui-Gon’s voice.

12.During the second duel (at the end), Vader electrocutes Kenobi, which accelerates his age.

13.Between the two duels, Kenobi also kills Reva, which symbolizes that he’s “going dark.”

14.Kumail Nanjiani’s character also dies at some point.

15.Kenobi tauntingly calls Vader “Darth” at least once.

16.Reason provided for why the first Death Star took so long to build.

17.Kenobi learns his way around the Death Star (he seems to know it well in A New Hope), and calls it a “space station” at least once in the show.

18.Vader gets unmasked in front of Kenobi (and we see Hayden’s burnt face).

19.Bail Organa refers to “Ben” as General Kenobi when he brings Leia back, hence why she knows Ben and Obi-Wan are the same person in A New Hope.

20.Kenobi also sees R2 and 3PO in the distance here and wants to go say hi to them, but Bail stops him and explains that he wiped 3PO’s memory (Kenobi already seems to know that in A New Hope somehow).

21.Show ends with Kenobi returning to Tattooine and getting his A New Hope house, robes and haircut.

22.Kenobi finally sees/ talks to Qui-Gon’s ghost (and they agree that the future is in Luke’s hands and not theirs).

23.“Ben” meets Luke (after finally getting Owen’s blessing).

24.Owen accidentally calls him “Kenobi” when introducing him to Luke (hence why Luke knows him specifically as “Ben Kenobi” in A New Hope cause, seriously, why would he keep his last name?!).

And that’s all I got! Again, I only expect a few of these predictions to be accurate (if any at all). Nevertheless, this was a fun little exercise for me, and I’m looking forward to the show regardless.

Peace!

UPDATE: My friend was kind enough to turn my list into an actual randomized bingo card:

UPDATE 2: Wait, why didn’t 3PO recognize Leia in R2’s hologram in A New Hope? Writing this post just made think of that…
