The Phoenix Curse: A Sci-Fantasy Short Story

 THE PHOENIX CURSE

Henry N. Silva

Age of Magic - Act I

The boy, barely a man, looks upon the endless ocean…

He stands on a cliff, just beyond his home, a humble little village of cottages, made of wood, straw, and nothing much more… Slowly, he turns away from the water, making his way to one such cottage. His robes gently brushing along the grass… Inside, he finds exactly whom he expects; his mentor, the last wizard, old as ever…

The wizard looks up, as he hears the door open, raising an eyebrow, “Are you ready now?”

The boy breathes a heavy sigh, “I believe so.” Carefully, he walks towards an ancient book, resting on a small table nearby. He opens to a page at random, while lifting his free hand high in the air. He then begins reciting spells in the ancient tongue, and his lifted hand suddenly glows red, with sparks… But then, something goes wrong, and with that, his hand ceases to glow, and the sparks fade…

The wizard rises to his feet, “Again!”

The boy tries a different spell, now his hand glows green, emitting sparks yet again… But once more, something goes wrong, and his hand returns to normal, like before.

But the wizard is not prepared to quit. “Again,” he repeats, at the top of his lungs.

The boy moves on to yet another spell, his hand glows purple now, still with sparks… But as always, the spell goes sideways, and the magic ceases to be…

With that, the boy grunts, slamming the book shut, “I cannot do it… I will never be you.”

The wizard sighs, “But you have to be. We are running out of time as is.”

The boy lowers his head in fear, “I know.”

As clear as day, he remembers first hearing the tale of the dying demon who drank the blood of a phoenix, allowing him to be reborn, once every thousand years. Only magic can defeat the demon, a magic that has been dying for centuries…

The wizard continues, “I cannot kill him alone, and if we wish to find a way to end the rebirth cycle, then we must do so together… This is the only way.”

The boy lifts his head back up, “I understand.”

The elder smiles, “Soon, you will take my place, as the last wizard there is, and when that time comes, you must teach others. For someday, magic will thrive once more.”

Age of Science - Act I

The girl, barely a woman, looks upon the endless ocean…

She stands on a balcony, there at home one of many tall, metal buildings, densely packed together, on a land that once belonged to a humble village… Slowly, she turns away from the water, making her way to a lab below. Her trench coat brushing along the floor… There, she finds exactly whom she expects: Her mentor, the professor, old as ever…

He looks up, as the door lifts open, raising an eyebrow, “You done with your break?”

The girl breathes a light sigh, “Yeah, I guess so.” Carefully, she walks towards a thin piece of stone, resting in a glass case, on a steel table.

The professor looks over, noticing a puzzled expression on the girl’s face, “You’re still in doubt about all this, aren’t you?”

“I still don’t understand how this could be a piece of the demon’s skin,” she admits.

As clear as day, she remembers first hearing of how the demon was last defeated by the last wizard, and a ‘being of light,’ and how only a piece of his stone skin remained from there…

“It’s just a chunk of rock,” she continues.

“I know,” the professor acknowledges, “But it’s an indestructible chunk of rock, and we gotta find out what weakens it.”

Suddenly, he begins to cough.

“It’s getting worse.” The girl asks, “Isn’t it?”

The professor smiles, “I’ll be fine.”

Age of Magic - Act II

The boy and the wizard walk on through the night, with only the moon and stars to light their way…

All is peaceful, as per usual… Until suddenly, out of nowhere, a tall pillar of smoke appears before them, quickly morphing into a demon of stone…

“He is here,” the wizard whispers, trembling, “The time has come… And we were too late.” He turns to his pupil, “Go! Run away!”

“No!” The boy shouts in return, “Let me help!”

“No!” The wizard pushes him away, “You are not ready… I am sorry.”

The boy proceeds to step backwards, in shock… The last wizard then faces forward, a dozen feet away from the enemy. He raises both of his hands towards the beast, firing beams of energy from them both. Alas, the demon remains unharmed, his stone skin shielding him from the magic.

For a moment, everything seems lost… But then, a few dozen feet to the east, a humanoid figure appears, seemingly made of strong, pale-blue light… Immediately, this new being fires a green ball of energy towards the demon, managing to blow open a piece of its rocky surface. The shard of skin falls to the floor, revealing the monster’s true, vulnerable flesh below…

In fear, the demon places his hands on his head, snapping his own neck. Instantly after, he fades into smoke once more. Defeated, for now…

The wizard then collapses to the floor, completely drained of all his energy… The boy runs over, desperate to save his mentor. Alas, he is too late. The wizard is dead…

He then looks back up towards the strange figure made from light in the distance, “Hello! You! Yes, you over there! Who are you?!”

Alas, the figure doesn’t answer. Instead, it vanishes instantly, into the fog…

The boy spends the next several days alone, sulking within the cottage of the wizard. Constantly, he looks over at the spell book, afraid to open it once again…

But eventually, he faces his fears, opening the book to a page at random. Quickly, his eyes fix upon a certain spell, perhaps the most difficult of spells, one which no past wizard could ever achieve…

But he knew this spell could save the future. A future that likely had no magic. Despite his shortcomings, he knew he had to try, even though he knew he could only travel forward. There would be no going back…

Breathing deeply, he begins to recite the words, preparing to travel through time…

Age of Science - Act II

The girl sits alone in the lab, sulking…

Beside her sits a photo of the late professor, when he still looked healthy, as well as a metallic ray-gun, one that could penetrate the demon’s skin. The professor finished making it just before he died, after studying the stone shard he already possessed, endlessly…

Calmly, the girl picks up the weapon, and then makes her way through the lab, reaching a tall, tubular device, leaning against a wall, a device that her mentor had warned her to never use…

“It’s only a prototype,” he used to say, “Your particles may be completely changed.”

It was a risk she would have to take, for she knew that, had the demon been truly defeated before, the professor would have never exposed himself to the energy that made him sick…

Breathing deeply, she steps into the machine, preparing to travel through time…

Age of Magic - Act III

The girl finds herself surrounded by fog…

In the distance, she sees the demon, locked in a duel with an older man… She then looks down at her own body, noticing that her skin now grows bright-blue. Her particles had been rewritten, just as the professor had predicted… For a moment, she panics, but then calms herself;

I’ll find a way to fix myself later…

She then refocuses on the duel ahead, raising her ray-gun straight at the demon. She fires a blast in his direction. Moments later, she sees the beast snapping his own neck, fading into ash and smoke. She then hears a voice calling out to her;

“Hello! You! Yes, you over there! Who are you?!”

She wants to answer, but before she can, her skin suddenly returns to normal. In that moment, she feels herself growing sick. Further effects from the time travel, no doubt. She presses a touch-screen on her watch, her only way home, but nothing occurs. Her heart sinks, as she realizes she is trapped forever in the past…

Frantically, she runs away from the scene, searching around. Soon enough, she finds a cottage with a sign;

Healer

She makes her way indoors, collapsing on the floor. A doctor rushes over to treat her, but it is no use. The girl takes her final breath…

Days later, a blacksmith enters the same cottage, “Greetings, doctor! Was wondering if you could help with my cold.” He then looks over at some gadgetry, resting on a table, “What is that?”

“A strange woman was wearing those things,” the doctor explains, “She stumbled in here and died the other night.”

The blacksmith studies the technology carefully, “I would like to take these home with me. Hopefully this is alright with you.”

The doctor nods, “Feel free to do so.”

Age of Science - Act III

The boy finds himself in a strange land…

His mind does its best to comprehend the dense, tall buildings that surround him. The locals all around stand there in shock… Suddenly, a familiar pillar of smoke appears, just a few feet away from him. Soon enough, the demon comes into view, his wound still visible on his side…

Looking closely, the boy sees the exposed flesh, vulnerable in a way that only magic could defeat. He knows well enough that this is the key to destroying the vicious monster, for good…

Breathing deeply, he raises his hand, as he begins to recite a spell. A bolt of lightning then emerges from his fingertips, hitting the demon’s wound.

The beast crumbles into ash, defeated forever…

The boy then looks around at the others there with him. Perhaps some of them possessed the potential for magic. Perhaps he could teach them all he knows…

Perhaps there was a chance to begin again…

2023 Pop Culture Review

So last year I did posts for my favorite albums of the last 60 years, my top 5 films from 1977-2022, and my top 10 favorite songs from 1967-2022. Now that 2023 is almost over, I figured it only made sense to keep the tradition going and do it all again for this year. Same rules still apply (only one song per album not counting b-sides, etc.), except I’m getting rid of the “only one film per franchise can be #1” rule from this point onward. And even though I’ve said this before, just to clarify, I know some of these artists are shitty people in real life, but I still like their art. It is what it is.

…Well, here you go:

TOP 5 FILMS

1.Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 3

2.Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One

3.Oppenheimer

4.Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse

5.John Wick: Chapter 4

TOP 10 SONGS

1.The Orwells - “Friendly Fire (Alternate Version)”

2.The Orwells - “Bar Fly”

3.Linkin Park - “More the Victim”

4.Royal Blood - “Supermodel Avalanches”

5.Royal Blood - “Shiner in the Dark”

6.Dua Lipa - “Dance the Night”

7.Dua Lipa - “Houdini”

8.Lenny Kravitz - “TK421”

9.Teddy Swims - “Lose Control”

10.Slipknot - “Bone Church”

BEST ALBUM

Foo Fighters - But Here We Are

Congrats to Lenny Kravitz for finally making onto one of these lists for the first time ever (his daughter Zoe technically made last year’s songs list as a co-writer of Taylor Swift’s “Lavender Haze”). Also, I must admit that “Area Codes” by Kaliii almost made the song list for this year too.

…Well, that’s just about gonna do it for me.

Peace!

Ranking Theatrical Superman Films Based On First Impressions

DISCLAIMER: I might come back and update this post as more theatrical Superman films are released.

Since I recently did a ranking for all theatrically-released Batman films, I figured it made sense now to do one for his polar opposite, Superman, who has also had quite a presence on the big screen for several decades now. And as per usual with me, this ranking is based strictly on first impressions. Furthermore, some of these entries only feature Sups in a cameo role, at most, but I decided to include them anyway…

With that all out of the way, let’s get going:

Loved it

1.Superman

2.The Lego Movie

3.The Lego Batman Movie

4.Superman: The Movie

5.Superman II (either version)

6.Shazam!

I liked it but didn’t love it

7.The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part

8.Teen Titans Go! To the Movies

9.Justice League (any version)

10.The Flash

Wasn’t sure how to feel about it

11.Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (any version)

12.Man of Steel (third act was too much)

Bad, but at least it’s funny

13.Superman III

14.Superman IV: The Quest for Peace

Didn’t like it

15.Superman Returns

Didn’t watch it

16.DC League of Super-Pets

17.Black Adam

18.Superman and the Mole Men

19.DC Heroes vs. Eagle Talon (seriously, wtf is this?!)

Peace!

The Secret Above: A Space Opera Short Story

NOTE: The following story is technically a prequel to my book Next Star Over. That said, I did my best to structure this story in a way where it can be read without needing to also read the book that follows it.

THE SECRET ABOVE

Henry N. Silva

Year 8999 A.V.

Cliff Ion’s first day as a Star-Drifter is about to begin…

Nervously, the young man stands tall, his cape matching the red forest surrounding him. With a deep inhale, he removes his driftcard from his pocket, running his thumb over the small, black jewel located on the edge of the gold-plated card. Suddenly, a holographic projection of planets and moons appear all around him, each accompanied with a piece of text. Instantly, his eyes catch one message in particular;

Need help saving a child.

With another inhale, he lifts a finger towards the message, touching it ever-so-slightly. Immediately, the holograms vanish, and Cliff fastens his driftcard away. He then resumes standing still. A dozen or so minutes pass, until a small, two-man starship descends from the clouds, landing just a few feet before him. To his surprise, a rusted, humanoid android stumbles out;

“Are you the one who answered my call?”

Cliff nods, “I am.”

“Very well, then,” the robot nods. “Let’s get going.”

***

Cliff Ion watches, as stars all around him pass through at lightspeed…

Quietly, he sits behind his robotic customer, piloting the small starship with ease.

“So,” the android begins, “What made you decide to become a Star-Drifter?”

Instantly, Cliff flashes back to the horrors of his homeworld, in the days when he wanted to get as far away from it as possible, and explore the galaxy at large. As clear as day, he sees the “goblins” attacking him and his people, their skin pitch black and wirey, their eyes piercing and evil…

We have to fight back, he recalls his father telling him.

What’s the point?, he remembers answering back.

“…Well?” The android asks again.

“Sorry,” the young man sighs. “I don’t wanna talk about it.”

***

Cliff Ion finds himself in a world of green stone…

The terrain is mostly flat, with the occasional mountain scattered about.

The broken android points to the mountain closest to them, “The child is stuck at the summit.”

Cliff turns to him, “So that’s all you need me to do? Climb a mountain? With all due respect, you couldn’t do that yourself?”

The robot points to his own, broken body, “Have you not seen the condition I am in?”

“Oh.” Cliff gives him an understanding nod, “Fair enough.”

With that, the Drifter makes his way towards the small, mountainous structure, ascending with relative ease. At its summit, he finds an entrance to a cave, and proceeds to make his way in slowly, switching on a flashlight from his utility belt, to guide him on his way…

Carefully, he walks for several dozens steps, with silence all around… And then, seemingly from nowhere, a screech fills the air. Soon after, a figure steps into view. A monster, of some sort, not dissimilar from the goblins Cliff knows all too well…

The Drifter recoils, “Get back! I said get back, you piece of trash!” Quickly, he removes a ray-gun from his belt, aiming it directly at the beast, preparing to fire… Until, suddenly, the creature looks upward, its eyes meeting Cliff’s gaze. He expects to see evil, but instead, he sees innocence. This thing, whatever it is, is afraid. It’s no monster. In fact, it’s a child…

With a sigh of acceptance, Cliff lowers his weapon, reaching out a helping hand in its place…

***

Cliff Ion makes his way back down the mountain, the child following right behind him…

The Star-Drifter walks slowly, constantly turning his head back, ensuring the creature’s safety… Efficiently, the pair arrive at the smooth surface below, the android there to greet them both.

“Well done!” He hands Cliff a small sack of coin.

“Where’s the rest of the family anyways?” The young man can’t help but ask.

The robotic caretaker points a finger to a sinkhole nearby, “I was programmed long ago to take care of them all.”

Overcome with curiosity, Clifford descends to the underground below, only to find an entire community of the same alien he rescued, some taller than others. A mixture of children and adults, no doubt.

Like before, he recoils, worried that the adults may be more threatening than their younger counterparts.

Swiftly, they all look over. Cliff takes a careful look at all of their eyes, seeing only innocence once again…

The Stowaway: A Space Opera Short Story

NOTE: The following story is technically a sequel to my book Next Star Over: Into the Past. That said, I did my best to structure this story in a way where it can be read without needing to also read the book that precedes it.

THE STOWAWAY

Henry N. Silva

Year 9006 A.V.

Lee Kred awakens in a black forest…

The young, leather-clad man stumbles to his feet, slowly recalling what led him to his current predicament. Just moments ago, he was battling his adversary, Rex Falco, who magically banished him to some unknown part of the galaxy…

I gotta get back to Detrid, the lost one tells himself. Falco must be back there by now…

Carefully, he makes his way through the dark woods, with only the yellow sky above to light his way… He walks for several dozen feet, eventually noticing a large, weathered starship, resting beside a cave in the distance.

Thank the gods!

Quietly, he approaches the vessel, its ramp wide open… Suddenly, he hears the raspy voice of an older man, coming from the cave;

“Come on, lads!”

In a fit of panic, Lee heads straight into the ship, hiding behind a tall crate. Moments later, a group of aging pirates appear from the cave, passing Lee by as they head to their ship’s upper lobby.

“You sure no one will find the treasure here, Cap?” One of the crew members asks.

“Certain,” The Captain growls back. “This here is an uncharted world, mate. No one knows about it but us!”

Soon enough, all of them make it to the control room above. The ramp suddenly closes, as the ship takes off into space. Lee nearly falls over from the jolt of lightspeed…

A few hours pass, until the stowaway hears a pair of footsteps, descending from the control room above. Not long after, a figure creeps up from behind the crate. Lee looks over, finding himself face-to-face with The Captain…

“Well,” the older man snarls, “what’d we have here?”

Lee remains silent.

The Captain continues, “Well, since now you know where me treasure is, I’m either gonna have to kill yah or make yah part of me crew.”

“Relax, old man,” Lee snaps back. “I couldn’t care less about your treasure. I was magically banished to whatever planet we were just on. All I’m trying to do is get home.”

“Banished, eh?” The Captain raises an eyebrow, “How does a wee lad like yourself get banished?”

Lee rolls his eyes, “It’s a long story, but if you really must know… I come from a world where different factions of people have been in a religious war with each other for ages. My parents are arms dealers who profit off all the turmoil. This guy named Falco went to go find something that could end the fighting, so I was sent to stop him, but he was able to use some kinda magic to send me away.”

“Ah, I see,” The Captain grins. “Trying to make ol’ mommy and daddy proud, eh? That’s all that really matters to yah! I can see it in yer eyes.”

Again, Lee remains silent…

“Tell yah what,” The Captain reaches for a small communication device in his pocket, handing it to Lee, “We’ll take yah home, and when yah finally get a spine, gimme a call. I’m short on crew as is.”

Lee takes a few steps back, perplexed, “Really? You’re gonna help me, just like that?”

The Captain shrugs, “I was a stowaway once too, yah know.”

***

Lee Kred treads lightly down the dark hallway, into a dimly-lit room he knows all too well… Only two others are there, his father and mother…

Lee kneels down, “Forgive m-”

“Silence!” Father Kred shakes his head in disapproval, “We will not tolerate your excuses any longer.”

“But-”

“Enough!” Mother Kred chimes in, “Falco returned with proof of the true version of the legend. Now our business is crumbling. Nothing you say or do can ever fix this.”

Lee feels his own gut twist into a knot.

“Leave us,” she continues, “and never return.”

He does as she says, barely managing to hold back the tears…

***

The son of the arms dealers walks alone, across the capital city of Detrid-7, face hidden beneath a hood…

Between the tall structures of metal and stone, he sees people clad in either red, blue, or green, the colors of the planet’s different belief systems. Normally there would be riots, but not today. Today, there is only a few pushes and shoves at most. Lee realizes that his parents were right. Things are changing… Suddenly, he sees a young man coming his way, dressed in gray. It’s Rex Falco, completely oblivious to his enemy’s presence…

Lee stands there, overcome with emotion. The source of all his troubles, now closing in on his direction. With a deep inhale, he prepares to attack… But then, he suddenly recalls the final words of his mother…

Nothing you say or do can ever fix this.

He remains frozen still, allowing Rex to pass him by…

Several moments later, Lee removes The Captain’s communication device from his pocket, studying it carefully…
